Saskatchewan crop report: Harvest nearly complete

Glacier FarmMedia — Combining in Saskatchewan is virtually complete with the provincial report putting the harvest at 97 per cent finished overall. That’s a gain of six points during the week ended Oct. 7, as parts of the province contended with rain delays.

Southwest Saskatchewan nudged up one point to wrap the region’s harvest, while the southeast west-central areas advanced 98 per cent finished. The east-central, northwest and northeast reached 93 per cent done.

The combining of durum and chickpeas has wrapped up, with barley, spring wheat, and canaryseed at 99 per cent complete. Close behind are oats at 96 per cent finished and canola at 94.

Saskatchewan’s soybeans jumped 21 points to 77 per cent finished and flax added 20 points at 88 per cent finished.

With the moisture received over the last few weeks, the province’s hay was rated at 20 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate and one per cent short.

Those rains helped to maintain topsoil moisture conditions, with the ratings at 60 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and four per cent very short.

The strong winds experienced in some parts of the province resulted in reports of shelling damage to standing canola and oats. Swaths of canola and hay were blown around, adding to the challenges.

As the harvest wraps up more farmers have moved to their field work including fall spraying.
