Chicken farmer committee to steer Sask. industry fund

A committee of the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan is now formally in charge of a fund supporting development of the province’s poultry sector.

The Saskatchewan Chicken Industry Development Fund (SCIDF), set up by the CFS and provincial Agri-Food Council in 1999, has until now operated as a not-for-profit corporation to back poultry research and market development projects.

The fund has been rolled out of the corporation and into the care of the CFS committee effective Jan. 29 through amended provincial regulations.

The fund committee is to include three elected licensed producers, a member appointed from the CFS and another from the Agri-Food Council.

The new fund has already had its first meeting and named producer James Dyck as the committee chair and Patrick Keet as the vice¿chair, along with CFS chair Diane Pastoor, Agri-Food Council appointee Hubert Esquirol, and Nelson Keet as committee members.

According to a notice from CFS CEO Clinton Monchuk, the new committee has already approved a proposed budget for its first year of operations and "will see an increased effort to fund research, development and promotions."

A funding application form for the SCIDF is available online and, when filled out, should include detailed information on proposals for eligible poultry research and market development projects. The CFS will separately handle requests for funding for general promotional work.

Saskatchewan’s chicken industry employs almost 1,000 people and produced about 51.4 million kg of chicken in 2009, flowing mainly through two processors, Lilydale Foods at Wynyard and Prairie Pride Natural Foods in Saskatoon.
