North American Grain/Oilseed Review: Soybeans rise higher, grains in red

Glacier FarmMedia – SOYBEAN futures at the Chicago Board of Trade extended their rallies, with the March contract up by double digits.

The United States Department of Agriculture reported export sales of 2025-26 soybeans totalled 2.062 million tonnes for the week ended Jan. 8, exceeding the trade’s expectations. Export sales for 2025-26 and 2026-27 soymeal combined were within trade expectations at 340,600 tonnes, while soyoil sales were 14,100 tonnes.

The USDA also reported private export sales of soybeans this morning of 360,000 tonnes for 2025-26 and 75,000 tonnes for 2026-27 to unknown destinations. Another 204,000 tonnes for 2025-26 were sold to China, as well as 110,000 tonnes to unknown destinations.

The U.S. National Oilseeds Processors Association tallied 224.99 million bushels of soybeans crushed in December, which were above trade estimates, up 4.14 per cent from November and up 8.9 per cent from last year. Soyoil stocks rose 8.5 per cent from November and 32.8 per cent from the previous year at 1.642 billion pounds.

CONAB trimmed their 2025-26 Brazilian soybean production estimate by one million tonnes at 176.12 million, but still a record large harvest.

CORN showed modest losses on Thursday, trading sideways since its steep drop on Monday.

There were 1.140 million tonnes of 2025-26 U.S. corn sold for export last week, the USDA reported.

There were two private export sales of 2025-26 U.S. corn reported this morning: 500,300 tonnes to unknown destinations and 260,000 tonnes to Japan.

CONAB left its 2025-26 Brazilian corn production estimate unchanged at 138.87 million tonnes.

The Rosario Grain Exchange projected Argentina’s corn crop at 62 million tonnes, up one million from its previous estimate.

March WHEAT contracts lost between two to five cents per bushel on Thursday.

The USDA reported 156,300 tonnes of 2025-26 wheat were sold for export, up 32 per cent from the previous week but near the lower end of trade expectations.

Saudi Arabia issued a tender for 595,000 tonnes of wheat with a Friday deadline. South Korean purchased 50,000 tonnes of U.S. wheat in an overnight tender.

Expana upped their European Union wheat production forecast by 300,000 tonnes at 128.6 million, but trimmed its export forecast by 1.2 million tonnes at 28.8 million.
