Even inside Canada, it’s daunting to scout out new markets and new distribution channels for grains and oilseeds, let alone for perishable goods.

Making the leap into another country merely multiplies the obstacles. Potentially, though, it can multiply the rewards too. So where do you turn for help to figure out if your brainwave is literally the best new thing since sliced bread, or if instead it’s an idea that should be left permanently on the back burner?

If you’re considering exporting food, Canada has many resources to help individuals and companies develop export markets. There’s more than we can list here, but we can provide something of a framework for finding a few places to start.

For general statistics about your product, food production in Canada and trends in ag exports, go to Ag Canada’s website at agcanada.com/daily Along with background information, this site also has resources and links. You’ll find some get-started information too, including technical domestic and export trade requirements.

The Canadian Trade Commissioners Service has regional offices and a valuable website.

Export Development Canada, a crown corporation is Canada’s official export credit agency. Although you might not be at the financing stage yet, there are some good resources on their website at In particular, the section on “Exporting 101” is a good place to start learning about the rules, the players and how to make exporting work for you.
