– United States President Donald Trump is expected to declare a national emergency in order to obtain the funding to build a wall along the Mexican border. He is also expected to sign a bipartisan bill that will prevent another government shutdown, but the legislation does not include his requested border wall funding. The declaration of a national emergency is expected to lead to numerous legal challenges.
– Trade talks between the U.S. and China will continue in Washington next week, after a week of negotiations in Beijing failed to reach an agreement, Chinese president Xi Jingping told the Xinhua News Agency. The two countries have until March 1 before additional tariffs go into effect.
– Foreign investors reduced their holdings of Canadian securities by C$19.0 billion in December, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, Canadians lowered their holdings of foreign securities by C$425 million.
