  • United States President Donald Trump targeted Brazil in his latest round of tariff threats. On Wednesday, Trump warned Brazilian President Luiz da Silva that he would slap a 50 per cent tariff on U.S. imports from Brazil effective Aug. 1, if Silva didn’t halt the so-called witch-hunt against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. The latter is currently on trial for an alleged coup attempt following Silva’s 2022 election win.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued its export sales report on Thursday and for the week ended July 3, those for wheat came to 567,800 tonnes. Corn export sales included 1.26 million tonnes of old crop and 888,600 tonnes of new crop. Soybeans had 503,000 tonnes of old crop and 248,400 of new crop. Also, export sales of soymeal comprised of 207,700 tonnes of old crop and 370,800 of new crop, with those for soyoil at 4,000 tonnes.

 

  • Conab, Brazil’s equivalent to the USDA, issued its monthly supply and demand report on Thursday. It trimmed Brazil’s 2024/25 soybean production to 169.49 million tonnes and added three million tonnes to the country’s total corn harvest now at 131.97 million tonnes. The USDA will include its estimates for the Brazilian crops in its S/D report on Friday.

 

  • Shares in Nvidia topped US$164 each on Wednesday, which made it the first publicly traded company to reach US$4 trillion in value. Nvidia develops and manufactures computer chips for the evolving artificial intelligence industry. In 2023, its shares were valued at $14 each.
