– In response to protests in Los Angeles against his immigration crackdown starting on Friday, United States President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to quell unrest but only escalated tensions further. More than 300 federal troops arrived in the city over the weekend, most of them in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center, where they shot smoke canisters and non-lethal rounds of ammunition. Police declared an unlawful assembly on Sunday, but California Governor Gavin Newsom said the state government will sue the Trump administration over the unsolicited deployment.

– Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce on Monday that by the end of this fiscal year, his government will spend two per cent of the country’s gross domestic product on military spending, the benchmark set by NATO. Sources said a new defence industrial strategy focused on homegrown production will also be announced, as well as the acquisition of drones, armoured vehicles and sensors to increase security in the Arctic. The Canadian Coast Guard, now under the purview of the Department of Fisheries, will be run by the Department of National Defence.
– The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization reported on Friday its Food Price Index declined 0.8 per cent month-to-month to an average of 127.7 points in May. However, the index gained six per cent compared to last year. The Cereal Price Index was down 1.8 per cent from April and down 8.2 per cent from last year. The Vegetable Oil Price Index was down 3.7 per cent from the previous month. However, the price indices for dairy and meat were up 0.8 per cent and 1.3 per cent from April, respectively.
