Global Markets: Trump claims progress on Greenland

  • United States President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday that the framework for a future deal on Greenland was agreed to with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Although Trump didn’t provide any details of the deal, he scrapped tariffs on countries opposing his Greenland plans. Meanwhile, Rutte stressed that he didn’t discuss Danish sovereignty over Greenland with Trump. Frederiksen said she’s willing to talk about Greenland political, security, investment and economic issues with Trump, but not sovereignty.

  • In speaking with the Canadian Press on Wednesday, China’s ambassador to Canada, Wang Di, said Canada should move quickly on future collaboration with China. Wang’s comments come almost a week after the two countries reached a deal that’s to reduce tariffs on Canadian canola and other goods as well as those on Chinese electric vehicles. However, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has called for a boycott of Chinese EVs and Unifor President Lana Payne demanded the federal government protect autoworkers.  
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday that there’s been a lack of movement on a ceasefire his country’s war with Russia. Zelenskyy criticized Europe for not “taking action.” He met with President Trump at Davos, after which Trump said a peace agreement was coming very soon.  
  • Statistics Canada reported on Thursday that the number of people collecting employment insurance benefits rose 1.6 per cent in November from October to 566,000. StatCan said the increase in November largely pertained to men 24-years-old and older. From November-to-November the agency found that women 55 and older saw the greatest increase in collecting benefits.
