– In a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw on Monday, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said the federal government will “step up significantly in its own military spending” in order to prevent Russian aggression in Europe. Canada has faced criticism over its inability to spend two per cent of its gross domestic product on defence, a target mandated by NATO. Trudeau was in Kyiv on Saturday on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, announcing a C$3.02 billion security assistance package for the beleaguered country. On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the conflict.

– Former United States President Donald Trump won South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary on Saturday with 59.8 per cent of the vote, compared to 39.5 per cent for former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. Despite her dwindling chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination, Haley vowed to stay in the race going into Tuesday’s Michigan primary. Trump’s criminal trial on charges he falsified business records to hide hush money payments to three individuals will begin on March 25.
– Rachel Homan’s team from Ottawa defeated Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 5-4 in the final of the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian women’s curling championship, in Calgary on Sunday. It is Homan’s fourth title and her team will represent Canada at the World Women’s Curling Championship in Sydney, N.S. next month. Jones, a six-time Canadian, two-time world and 2014 Olympic women’s curling champion, announced prior to the event she will retire from the women’s game at the end of the season.
