Global Markets: Strong growth in Q3 StatCan reports

  • Economic growth in Canada during the third quarter of 2025 averted a recession, while far exceeding analysts’ expectations reports said on Friday. Statistics Canada said the real gross domestic product increased 2.6 per cent in Q3, compared to predictions of 0.5 per cent growth. Also, it’s an improvement of 0.8 of a point compared to economic expansion in Q2. Exports led the charge, reversing course with a 0.2 per cent increase in Q3 from a seven per cent drop in Q2.

  • A deal for a new pipeline between the federal and Alberta governments was signed on Thursday. The pipeline is to stretch from Alberta to the British Columbia coast and will cross Indigenous lands. The memorandum of understanding included terms that Alberta must negotiate agreements with the B.C. government and the affected First Nations. Meanwhile, Liberal MP Steven Guilbeault resigned from the federal cabinet, suggesting Prime Minister Mark Carney is backsliding from previous environmental commitments.
  • The United States Department of Agriculture reported on Friday a flash sale for 312,000 tonnes of 2025/26 soybeans to China. This comes as the Trump administration is adamant that China will buy 12 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans before Jan. 1, despite the absence of a signed trade deal between the two countries.
  • An outage Thursday evening at the CME Group knocked out trading in commodities, equities, and currencies. The system failure began at 8:40 p.m. CST and trading ground to a halt within a few minutes. The latest reports said full trading resumed on Friday in time for the 7:30 a.m. CST start.
