– Quebec farmers protested by driving tractors between the regional offices of the provincial farmers’ body Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) and the province’s agriculture department in Sherbrooke on Monday. Since December, farmers in Quebec have protested the government about high interest rates, numerous restrictions and large amounts of paperwork. The UPA said net income for farms across the province dropped by 50 per cent on average last year. Only one per cent of Quebec’s provincial budget goes to agriculture and since 2015, farmers have been charged C$400 million for environmental fees.

– Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan said he has appointed an inquiry commission looking into the root causes of the port strike in British Columbia last July. Longshore workers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union walked off the job in a dispute with the B.C. Maritime Employers Association for less than two weeks. The commission will be led by Vince Ready, who was appointed as a mediator during the strike.
– Opening statements were delivered in the criminal trial of former United States President and presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in a New York City courthouse on Monday. Trump is facing trial for 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide hush money payments, including a US$130,000 sum to adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels. He was also accused of falsely recording his reimbursement of then-associate Michael Cohen as a legal expense. Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, said in his opening statement there was nothing wrong with influencing an election, calling it democracy. David Pecker, former publisher of The National Enquirer, was the first witness called to the stand.
