Putin plans to serve another six-year term in office, which would make him Russia’s longest-serving leader in more than 200 years. Many Western nations have said the vote was not free or fair due to censorship and the imprisonment of political rivals. Thousands of protesters, most of them former supporters of late activist Alexei Navalny who died in an Arctic penal colony last month, demonstrated at polling stations.

– A report from the United Nations showed that famine is expected sometime over the next two months in the northern area of the Gaza Strip, with 1.1 million people, half of the territory’s population facing “catastrophic hunger”. Multiple agencies say that famine can be largely avoided if both Israel and Hamas allow aid to enter Gaza. United States President Joe Biden said the U.S. military will create a temporary port on Gaza’s coast to receive aid, but it will take weeks to execute.
– The Canadian Real Estate Association reported today that February home sales dropped 3.1 per cent from the previous month, while home prices were relatively unchanged. In January, home sales were up 3.7 per cent for the month.
– Leaders of Canada’s political parties will rise in the House of Commons later today to give speeches honouring former prime minister Brian Mulroney, who passed away on Feb. 29 at the age of 84. Mulroney’s body will lie in state on Tuesday and Wednesday in Ottawa before a state funeral in Montreal on Saturday.
