- Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in an Arctic penal colony 1,900km north of Moscow on Friday after taking a walk, according to reports, although confirmation and the cause of death were still lacking. Navalny, 47, was a prominent critic of Russian president Vladimir Putin and was serving a long jail term tied to his opposition activities.

- Canadian investors bought a record C$29.4 billion worth of foreign securities in December, while foreign investment in Canadian securities came in at C$10.4 billion, according to a report from Statistics Canada. As a result, the country saw a net outflow of C$19.0 billion from the economy during the month.
- Gaza’s largest still-functioning hospital in Rafah remained under siege by Israeli forces on Friday, with power outages leading to the deaths of at least five patients in intensive care, according to reports from the Gaza health ministry. Israeli air strikes on Rafah also continued Friday ahead of a possible major attack on the city.
