Global Markets: Planes collide in Japanese airport

– A Japanese coast guard aircraft and a passenger plane collided at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday, which both burst into flames and killed five crew members of the former. All 379 occupants of Japan Airlines flight JAL-516, which originated from Sapporo, were able to get out safely. The military aircraft, a Bombardier Dash-8, was headed to the western Japanese city of Niigata to deliver relief packages to residents affected by earthquakes on Monday. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks have killed at least 48 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

– Russian missiles attacked the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv as well as Kharkiv on Tuesday morning, killing at least four people and injuring more than 100. – Lee Jae-myung, leader of South Korea’s opposition Democratic Party and a former presidential candidate, was stabbed in the neck during a press conference on Tuesday in the Korean city of Busan. Police said he was conscious while being transported to a nearby hospital and was not in critical condition. The attacker asked Lee for an autograph and then stabbed him with a knife. Police said the suspect was questioned, but would not say why he attacked Lee.
