Global Markets: Israelis free two hostages, dozens of Gazans dead

  • Israeli forces stormed a heavily guarded apartment building in southern Gaza on Monday, freeing two hostages held by Hamas, according to reports. Local officials said at least 67 Palestinians were killed in the resulting gunfire and covering airstrikes.

 

  • A cargo vessel carrying corn from Brazil to Iran was reportedly targeted by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. The attack would mark the first time the Iranian-backed Yemini group set its sights on a vessel bound for Iran. Details on the incident were unclear, with initial reports claiming there was some damage to the vessel, while United States officials claimed the ship was targeted but never hit.

 

  • Former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb of the centre-right National Coalition Party won Finland’s election runoff Sunday against ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto of the green left with a 51.6 per cent to 48.4 per cent result.
