– United States President Joe Biden told reporters on Monday that he hopes for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas by next weekend, adding that they are “very close” to having a deal done. Biden also said Israel was willing to pause military activities in Gaza during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins March 10, if Hamas releases hostages. The proposal would allow hospitals and bakeries to be repaired, as well as 500 aid trucks to enter the territory every day.

– The Liberal government tabled its new Online Harms Act on Monday, which allows it to police seven categories of harmful content online including content used to bully a child, to promote terrorism and to show sexual content without consent. The bill would also amend the Criminal Code to allow longer prison sentences for spreading online hate, as well as establish a digital safety ombudsman and a five-person digital safety commission.
– One day before the Michigan Republican primary, the party’s national committee chairperson Ronna McDaniel announced her resignation on Monday. McDaniel, the niece of Utah Senator and former presidential nominee Mitt Romney, served in the position over the past seven years. Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump, who is the frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, announced plans to overhaul the leadership of the party, which would include installing his daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair with North Carolina state party chairman Michael Whatley.
– The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) reported first quarter net income of C$2.2 billion on Tuesday, up from C$1.76 billion at the same time last year. However, the bank said it earned C$1.69 per diluted share on an adjusted basis, compared to C$1.84 at the same time last year. Bank of Montreal (BMO) also reported an adjusted diluted share of C$2.56 in its financial statement on Tuesday, compared to a pre-report estimate of C$3.02.
