Global Markets: IGC ups global corn crop

  • The International Grains Council raised its call on global corn production in 2025/26 to 1.274 billion tonnes — an increase of five million from a month ago due to upward revisions for the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. That compares with 1.218 billion tonnes in 2024/25. The IGC cut its call for global wheat production by a million tonnes from March, now at 806 million tonnes. That would still be up by eight million tonnes on the year. Soybean production was raised by a million tonnes from March, at 428 million tonnes. That compares with 417 million tonnes in 2024/25.

  • Rising trade tensions and sweeping shifts in the global trading system will trigger downward revisions of the International Monetary Fund’s economic forecasts, said IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday. However, she added that no global recession was expected.

 

  • The European Central Bank cut interest rates on Thursday, lowering its benchmark rate to 2.25 per cent. The move was said to be taken to counter worries about economic growth brought on by U.S. tariffs.

 

  • Wheat futures in the U.S. were posting solid gains Thursday morning, while corn and soybeans held within a few cents of unchanged.

 

  • Malaysian palm oil futures were lower for the fourth straight session on Thursday, hitting their weakest levels since the beginning of October. Rising production prospects continued to overhang the market.
