Global Markets: Gunmen storm Ecuador TV station

  • Gunmen armed with explosives stormed a live television broadcast in Ecuador on Tuesday as part of a wave of violence that included the kidnapping of seven police officers. The TV staff were eventually rescued and the gunmen arrested. The country was placed in a 60-day state of emergency over the weekend amid mounting drug-related violence and unrest in prisons. Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has named 22 gangs as terrorist organizations.

 

  • A major storm was battering the northeastern United States on Wednesday, with power out for hundreds of thousands of people. New Jersey has declared a state of emergency with many roads flooded.

 

  • Houthi rebels in the Red Sea continue to disrupt shipping through the region, with U.S. and British naval forces reportedly shooting down 21 drones and missiles fired by the Yemen-based/Iranian-backed militants on Tuesday.
