Global Markets: Comedian leads Ukrainian presidential race

– In a case of life imitating art, Ukrainian comedic-actor Volodymyr Zelenskiy is leading the presidential election race in the country after the first round of voting. Zelenskiy stars in a television show as a school teacher who unexpectedly winds up as president. He is now sitting with about 30 per cent of the votes after the first round of voting in the real election, well ahead of the incumbent Petro Poroshenko. A runoff vote will now be held.

– China’s manufacturing sector showed better-than-expected growth in March, according to both private and official reports out of the country. The better factory numbers out of China helped ease concerns over an economic slowdown and gave a boost to international equity markets to start the week.

– Local elections in Turkey saw President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party lose control of the capital of Ankara for the first time in nearly two decades. Istanbul was claimed by both the AKP and the opposition Republican People.
