Global Markets: Civilians killed in Houthi attacks

  • Three people were killed in attacks by Houthi rebels on a cargo vessel in the Red Sea Thursday, marking the first civilian fatalities from the months-long campaign by the Iranian-backed Yemeni militants in the key shipping route. The 20 remaining crew and three armed guards of the Barbados-flagged ship were taken to hospital by an Indian warship, with salvage operations underway for the crippled vessel.

 

  • A mass shooting in an Ottawa townhouse overnight left six people dead, including four children. A male was arrested at the scene, but police have yet to provide details of the incident.

 

  • Canada’s merchandise trade balance moved from a deficit of C$863 million in December to a surplus of C$496 million in January, according to a report from Statistics Canada, with imports down 3.8 per cent and exports dipping 1.7 per cent.
