– Statistics Canada reported on Tuesday that the country’s economy contracted by 0.3 per cent in October, its largest monthly drop in nearly three years. The manufacturing sector was down 1.5 per cent from September, while wood product manufacturing dropped 7.3 per cent. The Canada Post strike and a teachers’ strike in Alberta were also detrimental to the economy. Preliminary data suggested 0.1 per cent growth in November.
– Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Monday he has appointed business executive Mark Wiseman as Canada’s new ambassador to the United States. Wiseman, a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations, will officially replace the departing Kirsten Hillman on Feb. 15, 2026. Wiseman will be tasked with negotiating the renewal of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

– Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers announced on Monday they have reached tentative agreements, which would end a rolling work stoppage. Canada Post employees would receive a 6.5 per cent wage increase in the first year, a three per cent raise in the second year and increases matching the inflation rate in the following three years. There will also be enhanced benefits and a weekend parcel delivery model. The agreements would be in effect until January 2029. CUPW’s national board has recommended its members accept the deals.
– Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukrainian energy facilities on Monday night, killing three people. The attack used more than 650 drones and at least 30 missiles. Some border areas of western Ukraine were also hit, prompting Poland to deploy aircraft to protect its airspace.
