– Statistics Canada reported on Friday that Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.1 per cent in March, up from 5.8 per cent in February and the largest monthly jump in nearly two years. The economy lost 2,200 jobs in March, while 60,000 more people were either looking for work or temporarily laid off. Many of the jobs lost came from accommodation and food services, while health care and social assistance added jobs.

– Two officers in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) were dismissed and senior commanders were reprimanded after the Israeli government investigated the deaths of seven aid workers in an airstrike in Gaza earlier this week. The inquiry revealed that IDF officers mistook three vehicles from aid group World Central Kitchen (WCK) for those of Hamas gunmen, but standard procedures were already violated. In a statement, the WCK said it welcomed the dismissals as “important steps” but questioned the Israeli government’s impartiality in the inquiry. Hours after a phone call with United States President Joe Biden on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the re-opening of the Erez border crossing and the use of the Ashdod port in southern Israel to receive humanitarian aid going to Gaza. Jordanian aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing is also planned.
– Documents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) made public last night revealed that India and Pakistan tried to interfere in Canada’s 2019 and 2021 federal elections. Both countries were accused of conducting “clandestine activities” to further their respective governments’ influence. However, the reports noted that their summaries may be uncorroborated, single-sourced or incomplete. The documents are part of a public inquiry into foreign interference in those elections, especially from China and Russia.
