- Canada’s economy added 90,000 jobs in April with the country’s unemployment rate holding steady at 6.1 per cent, according to a report from Statistics Canada. The overall employment rate held at 61.4 per cent, following six consecutive monthly declines.
- More than 100,000 people have fled Rafah as fighting between Israeli soldiers and Hamas on the outskirts of the southern Gaza city intensifies and Israel reportedly prepares for expanded offensive actions. Humanitarian aid has been all but blocked into the city, which had previously served as a refuge for Palestinians escaping the violence elsewhere in the territory.
- Russia launched a ground attack near Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine on Friday, opening a new front in the ongoing conflict. Russian forces reportedly pushed across the Ukrainian border, but the incursion was being repulsed for the time being, according to Ukrainian military officials.
