Aug. 29 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news
moving markets in Canada and globally.
– Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland and United
States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer are expected
to meet today to try and salvage a deal on the North
American Free Trade Agreement, following an informal
agreement between Mexico and the U.S. on Monday. Freeland
said Mexican concessions on auto rules of origin and labour

Friday.
– Bill Blair, Canada’s minister of border security and
organized crime, is examining whether Canada should ban
handguns and assault weapons. In a mandate letter issued by
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Blair was asked to explore a
“full ban” while finding ways that don’t impede lawful use
of firearms.
– Canada’s first saliva screening equipment for police
to test for the main psychoactive agent in cannabis is
expected to be ready in four to six weeks. The federal
government has dedicated C$161 million in funding for police
training and drug testing as recreational cannabis use is
set to become legal in October.
