Global Markets: Canada to cap foreign student permits

  • The Canadian government announced Monday that it will cap the number of international student permits issued over the next two years, as part of an effort to ease the country’s housing crisis while also deal with concerns over the quality of education at some ‘diploma mill’ schools. The number of foreign student permits has tripled over the past decade, with the new cap expected to cut the intake by roughly a third in 2024.

  • The ongoing conflict in Gaza saw the deadliest attack by Hamas in months on Tuesday, with 21 Israeli soldiers reportedly killed after a Hamas rocket-propelled grenade triggered explosives. Meanwhile, Israel’s ground forces have encircled the Gazan city of Khan Younis, which was seen as a major advance. Cease-fire talks were ongoing.

 

  • The United States and United Kingdom launched fresh attacks on Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen on Monday, reportedly taking out several missile storage sites, drones and launchers. Canada, Australia, Bahrain and the Netherlands also contributed to the mission, according to military officials.
