Global Markets: BCE Inc. sells 45 radio stations

– BCE Inc. announced on Thursday it will sell 45 of its 103 Bell Media radio stations and cut 4,800 employees, which represents nine per cent of the company’s workforce. The affected radio stations are located in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada and will be sold to seven different companies. Last spring, six per cent of Bell Media’s workforce was eliminated and nine other radio stations were sold or shut down.

– Republicans in the United States Senate voted down a bipartisan US$118 billion bill on Wednesday which would have cracked down on immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border as well as provided additional financial aid to Ukraine and Israel. Despite the bill being drafted by Republicans, House members from their own party as well as former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the legislation. However, the Senate voted on Wednesday night to consider a revised version of the bill without border security provisions.

– Russia’s Central Election Commission on Thursday prohibited a liberal, anti-war politician from running against incumbent Vladimir Putin in the country’s upcoming presidential election. Moscow-area politician Boris Nadezhdin gathered at least 100,000 signatures in support of his candidacy, but the commission declared more than 9,000 signatures as invalid, which exceeded the five per cent maximum. Nadezhdin, who is against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and wants to start dialogue with Western nations, said he will appeal the decision.
