In Canadian agriculture, farmers do the pulling. Farmers are the ones taking the risks, dealing directly with the repercussions, sharing their first-hand experiences and applying new technologies and business models.

Leadership grows on every farm, as it does in other business sectors too. What sets farming apart is how farmers excel at finding the extraordinary leaders among us, and then how we shine at learning from them and supporting them.

All this happens in an industry where modesty isn’t just a virtue, it’s a code of conduct and way of life.

In fact, the very idea of naming Canada’s 12 most influential farmers seemed, well, unfarm-like when we first considered it. Besides, with Canadian agriculture being divided into so many regions and so many sectors, how could you ever come up with a list that anyone would agree with?

The farmers on the following pages aren’t all alike. Some run very big operations, others don’t. Some are political, others aren’t. As you’ll see, they’re of all ages, all sectors and all regions. Their farms are as different as you could imagine, and then some.

What these farmers share in common is the height of their vision, and the depth of their commitment. In each case, these are people who somehow make other farmers look at the world differently, try new ideas, and farm better.
