Canada’s largest grain handler plans expects to boost its marketing presence in Europe through a new office in Barcelona.

Viterra on Wednesday announced it has opened a new marketing office in the Mediterranean coast city, naming Jose Luis Esteban as the office’s managing director to “execute (Viterra’s) business plans in Spain.”

Esteban is tasked with managing Viterra’s “key customer relationships in the region” and working with Viterra’s international marketing network to “identify marketing opportunities and manage trade flows.”

During his career in Spain, Esteban “has established strong relationships with both the feed industry and flour millers,” Christian Joerg, Viterra’s vice-president and managing director for Europe, said in a release.

“His knowledge and insight into the unique needs of our customers will further enhance Viterra’s competitive position as a link between origination and destination markets.”

Viterra, based in Calgary and Regina, has in recent years set up marketing offices in several major cities worldwide, including Ho Chi Minh City, Montreal and Naples since the beginning of 2010.

The company last month announced plans to rework its business structure into a global model, managing its worldwide grain, agri-products and processing sectors each from the top down, rather than managing its businesses through separate geographic regions.
