Canadian potato, fruit and turf growers are expected to benefit from the launch of two new insecticides for use against leafhopper, Colorado potato beetle and others starting in 2010.
Valent Canada last week rolled out clothianidin products Arena 50 WDG and Clutch 50 WDG, both third-generation neonicotinoids offering “distinct advantages” over older neonicotinoids, the company said.
Those advantages include “very low” water solubility across a variety of soil types, but also a “consistent, quick uptake” into the plant and “some of the longest-lasting residual control available.”
“Clutch and Arena will give growers and turf professionals the peace of mind that they have a product that stays where it is applied, works consistently and fits well into their overall crop or turf protection programs,” Beth Connor, Valent Canada’s registration and development manager, said in a release.

Guelph-based Engage Agro will be the exclusive distributors of both Clutch and Arena in Canada, Valent said.
Clutch is registered for control of Colorado potato beetle, aphid and leafhopper in potatoes; aphid, leafhopper, plum curculio and leafminer in apples; pear psylla, aphid, leafhopper, plum curculio and leafminer in pears; and leafhopper, grape phylloxera, thrips and mealy bug in grapes.
The product is also registered for suppression of oriental fruit moth and codling moth in apples and pears.
In tree fruit applications, Clutch should be applied post-bloom (after petal fall in pears when bee hives have been removed) or in-season in grapes, the company said. Clutch has local translaminar and systemic movement following a foliar spray, Valent added.
Arena helps expand control options for turf professionals against white grubs and other surface-feeding insects, providing a “wide window of application” lasting from May to September, the company said.
The product is registered for control of European chafer, Japanese beetle, hairy chinch bug, annual bluegrass weevil, bluegrass billbug and European crane fly (leather jacket) in turf and on sod farms, golf courses and residential lawns, Valent said.
