Memorial services are planned for Thursday at Tugaske, Sask. for noted livestock auctioneer and market manager Sheldon Nicholson, who died Monday at age 45.
Manager of the Yorkton, Sask. marketing centre for Heartland Livestock Services, Nicholson was also a competitive auctioneer, placing in the top 10 in the annual Livestock Markets Association of Canada championships in 2005 and 2007.
Nicholson, originally from Central Butte, Sask., trained at the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, won several other competitions in his career and had previously participated in the World Livestock Auctioneer Championships. He also worked for Heartland at Winnipeg and at Brandon, Man. before joining the Yorkton centre.

According to his obituary Tuesday in the Moose Jaw Times Herald, Nicholson considered his "second job" to be his volunteer work with the Yorkton Exhibition Association. He was on the association’s board of directors at the time of his death and had previously served as its president.
A cause of death for Nicholson was not publicly released. Nicholson is survived by his wife Jean and their combined family of five children, for whom a memorial trust fund has been established at Scotiabank in Yorkton.
A "celebration of life" service for Nicholson is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 2) at the community hall at Tugaske, about 80 km northwest of Moose Jaw on Highway 42.
