A seed-piece treatment already registered to suppress wireworm in potato crops has been granted an expanded label for control of other potato pests.

Bayer CropScience’s clothiandin (Group 4) seed treatment Titan is now approved for control of Colorado potato beetle, potato flea beetle, potato leafhopper and aphids (potato, green peach, foxglove and buckthorn), the company said Monday.

Bayer’s portfolio manager for horticulture products, David Kikkert, said in a release that the expanded label makes Titan the only seed-piece treatment that controls “above-ground pests” while reducing damage caused by wireworm.

Wireworm, he said, has become “a growing pest in potato fields across Canada.”

The expanded product label includes an application rate from 10.4 to 20.8 millilitres per 100 kilograms of potato seed pieces, or 4.8 to 9.5 mL/cwt.

The higher rate is recommended for extended residual control of above-ground pests as well as reducing wireworm damage, the company said.

The expanded label applies to potato crops in all Canadian provinces and territories.
