A former mayor of the eastern Ontario municipality of North Glengarry has been tapped as the provincial Liberals’ parliamentary assistant to their ag minister.
Grant Crack, the new MPP for the riding of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, was named last week as parliamentary secretary to Agriculture Minister Ted McMeekin, and to Madeleine Meilleur, the province’s minister for francophone affairs.
Parliamentary assistants work with ministers to make sure government objectives are achieved, the province said. They regularly represent ministries during legislative debates and are responsible for "special projects."
Crack on Oct. 6 held the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell constituency for the Liberals after the riding’s longtime MPP, Jean-Marc Lalonde, decided not to seek re-election.
Crack in 1994 was elected mayor of Alexandria, Ont., about 80 km west of Montreal, and would later be named mayor of North Glengarry before he moved to provincial politics.
In the run-up to last month’s provincial election, Crack was promoted as a candidate who understands "the important role that our agricultural industry plays in our region."
