(Resource News International) –– Manitoba soybean fields hit hard by recent rains will likely need some reseeding, but the true extent of any damage won’t be known for another week to 10 days.

“There will be isolated pockets where reseeding will be needed for soybeans,” said a Manitoba soybean merchant.

However, “how bad it will be has yet to be determined,” he added, noting that the fields are already draining.

The merchant said deadlines for reseeding are fast approaching, “but that being said, if you can travel on the soil and there are good, warm growing conditions, it can pop out of the ground fairly quickly.”

From a marketing standpoint, the broker said there wasn’t much going on currently.

“The next seven to 10 days will have a big influence on all the traders,” said the merchant. He noted pulse buyers were generally “holding their breath” and waiting to see how the crops progress.

Manitoba farmers intended to plant 450,000 acres of soybeans this spring, which would be up from 415,000 acres the previous year, according to Statistics Canada estimates.
