Ottawa to fund P.E.I. value chain office

A value chain co-ordinator to help farmers, processors and retailers connect on Prince Edward Island will get over $61,000 as one of four ag innovation projects funded Friday.

The federal government announced over $155,000 in funding from the federal Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food (ACAAF) program for the co-ordinator and three other projects, including:

The P.E.I. ADAPT Council has contracted Barbara MacLeod as its value chain co-ordinator to help strengthen and build links and alliance between members of the value chain in P.E.I., to identify ways to generate greater profits throughout the industry.

MacLeod’s projects include finding ways to increase access to food products, including the potential for a food depot, and ensuring that ag products are part of the province’s Healthy Food Initiative. She also plans to look at opportunities for growth in areas such as agri-culinary activities and biofuels, the government said. The ACAAF funding for her position totals $61,582.
