The federal government’s ecoABC initiative will provide $5.05 million toward a northwestern Saskatchewan ethanol plant project, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced today.
North West Terminal, an farmer-owned inland grain terminal company at Unity, southwest of North Battleford, announced the 25-million-litre-per year project in mid-summer 2006 and plans to have it running in September 2008.
The $38 million plant, to be called North West Bio Energy, is funded mainly on investment from 317 farmers worth over $12 million, the government said in a release.
The plant, to be built next to the grain terminal at Unity, is expected to use about 68,000 tonnes of wheat per year, about 95 per cent of which it’s expected will be sourced locally.
The federal ecoABC initiative was set up in April, earmarking $200 million over four years to back construction or expansion of biofuel production plants in Canada.
