Pre-harvest payments to grain and oilseed farmers under Ontario’s risk management program (RMP) are being printed and mailed this week, Agricorp announced Wednesday.
The provincial farm program delivery agency said in a release that it expects over 10,000 farmers who submitted complete applications to get their payments by Christmas. The balance would go out in the new year.
The first run of pre-harvest payments amounts to over $40 million, the agency noted.
For those farmers not yet enrolled in RMP, their last chance is coming up quickly, with a deadline of Dec. 31, 2007, said Leo Guilbeault, chair of the provincial grain and oilseed safety net committee.
The RMP application deadline was extended to Dec. 31 in view of the busy fall and to give farmers time to fully understand the RMP’s requirements, Agricorp noted.
RMP participants must also secure coverage in the 2007 Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) program by Dec. 31, Agricorp added.
