The Ontario government plans to put up over $650,000 toward expansion of another kind of film industry in the province.

Sigma Stretch Film of Canada, based at Belleville, Ont., plans to put the funding toward a $4.4 million investment in new “state-of-the-art” production equipment and “complete building retrofits” at their facility, which makes polyethylene silage film for securing hay bales, as well as for binding various goods shipped by pallet.

The province’s $655,276 contribution, flowing through its Eastern Ontario Development Fund, will help Sigma Stretch Film add 10 new jobs over the next two years, the government said.

The Belleville facility will be the first in North America to house such a high-tech production line for silage film manufacturing. The company said the investment is expected to double its production capacity and allow it to access new markets in South America, while expanding its exports to Europe and Asia.

“This investment is going to improve efficiencies and make Sigma Film far more competitive in the global marketplace,” plant manager Kevin McCaughen said in the province’s release Monday.
