Ont. backs Weston bakery plant’s relocation

Nationwide bakery firm Weston Foods will get almost $2.5 million in public funding to move one of its baked and par-baked goods facilities to newly renovated space.

The Toronto company will get $2,448,825 from Ontario’s Rural Economic Development program to move its Ready Bake Foods plant at Cobourg, about 70 km west of Belleville, to a “newly renovated state-of-the-art facility” in the same community.

The new plant will help the business to operate more efficiently and produce new product lines, the province said in a release Monday.

University of Saskatchewan researchers are using field border mapping to collect data on field variability, including problematic weeds, and to predict things like yields.

The move is expected to help Weston create up to 60 jobs alongside the facility’s 90 current staff — and also to increase Ready Bake’s sales, Ready Bake president Ed Holik said in the release.

By boosting demand for locally-made goods, “this project supports local food processing, Ontario farmers and has the potential to generate up to 60 new job opportunities in the future,” Cobourg Mayor Peter Delanty said in the same release.

Operating since 1985 as Weston Foods’ frozen bakery division, Ready Bake Foods makes frozen dough and pre-proofed, par-baked and fully baked products including bread, pies, rolls and sweet goods.
