Harvest in Saskatchewan’s northern grain belt remains far behind the rest of the province, leaving the harvest 87 per cent complete provincewide, the agriculture department said yesterday.

That’s up from 78 per cent last week and from the five-year average of 79 per cent, but down from 92 per cent at the same time last year, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food said in its weekly update.

The province’s southwest and southeast are 99 and 98 per cent complete respectively, while the northeast in particular is just 56 per cent complete, up from 31 per cent two weeks earlier.

Good crop drying weather has not been readily available, so grain dryers are running, the province said. Flooding, frost, hail, waterfowl, wild game, wind and rain have played varying roles damaging remaining crops during the past week. Crops remaining also face downgrading due to sprouting, staining and bleaching, the report noted.
