N.B. backs agrifoods in Fundy region

Three food firms in New Brunswick’s Fundy region will share almost $65,000 in provincial funding to expand and diversify their offerings.

The funding will flow through Business New Brunswick’s $3 million NB Growth program, which provides eligible entrepreneurs up to $100,000 to establish new businesses, and up to $60,000 to expand, diversify or improve productivity at existing businesses.

“These three companies are tried-and-true examples of local entrepreneurs who have taken the initiative to expand their businesses and to bring their unique products to new markets,” provincial Natural Resources Minister Wally Stiles said in a release Thursday.

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

Rocky Mountain Maple Ltd. was approved for $27,760 to modernize its maple processing business by relocating to a new facility and buying new equipment, including a bottling unit, cooking unit and steam hood.

Petz International will get $22,650 to boost its production capacity for its baked and freeze-dried pet treats. upgrade its drying chamber and hire four people for a total of 14.

And family-owned Lewis Mountain Fresh Farm was approved for $14,500 to develop its roadway and to boost its capacity to ship higher volumes of product.

The company also bought a new packaging system that will allow it to distribute its sauerkraut to markets in the U.S. and Atlantic Canada.

“Our family began making sauerkraut 25 years ago, and in 2005 it officially became our full-time business,” Doug Lewis, whose company employs three people, said in the province’s release.

“The NB Growth Program has allowed us to further develop and diversify our market reach, including national and international consumers. The purchase of a new packaging system will increase our capacity to support growth for years to come.”
