Cheques to compensate Manitoba farmers for crops lost or unseeded this spring due to excess moisture are on the way.
About 900 cheques under the Canada-Manitoba Excess Moisture Assistance Program (CMEMAP) had been mailed as of Aug. 31, according to David Van Deynze, manager of claim services with the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC), which is administering the federal provincial program.
MASC received 4,999 applications by the Aug. 3 deadline.
Eligible farmers will receive $30 an acre, less a deductible of a minimum of 25 acres or five per cent of a farmer’s total annual crop acreage.
The total number of acres covered under the program and the total value of payouts should be available later this week, Van Deynze said.
It’s expected total payments will be under the $65 million allocated to Manitoba under the $450 million program.
