A new environmental levy on agricultural tires in Manitoba takes effect today to help fund the province’s tire recycling infrastructure.

The levy ranges from $4.50 to $15 per new tire sold in the province, based on size, Keystone Agricultural Producers, the province’s general farm group, wrote in a release Tuesday.

“Farmers can be sure that we now have a place to send used tires, and have confidence that we are continuing to decrease our environmental impact,” KAP president Ian Wishart said in the release.

KAP noted the next year will be an important one to monitor, to learn how many agricultural tires enter the recycling system. KAP also said it’s “optimistic” it will have the opportunity to sit on the advisory board of Tire Stewardship Manitoba, a non-profit industry-led group that oversees the province’s scrap tire programming.

CBOT Weekly: Gains in commodities amidst Iran conflict differ from Ukraine war

To analyst Tom Lilja of Progressive Ag in Fargo, N.D., there’s a difference in the commodity markets currently with the Middle East war and four years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine.

The province’s previous tire levy system did not apply to farm equipment tires and was recently restructured to better cover the cost of the program. Revisions to the funding formula to include farm and other off-road tires were “developed with KAP’s input to ensure that it was fair and balanced,” the ag group said.

KAP said it made “substantial gains from the initial proposal from government, which would have been a financial burden for producers.”
