Crown, a seed treatment for lentils and chickpeas, will be distributed exclusively by UAP Canada on the Prairies starting in this crop year.
Chemtura Crop Protection, the Connecticut company that holds the registration on Crown, and UAP announced the new agreement in a release Tuesday.
The fungicide is used to control lentil and chickpea diseases such as ascochyta, fusarium, rhizoctonia and botrytis. It’s also registered for a mix with Allegiance FL to control pythium in chickpeas.
UAP, which remains in the midst of a friendly takeover bid from fertilizer company Agrium, said in a release that it’s “committed to aggressively repositioning Crown’s value and pricing structure for the 2008 growing season.”

As pulse growers consider what to plant this spring, Chuck Penner of Leftfield Commodities Research said there is some optimism in the Canadian pulse market. Penner gave a presentation at the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers meeting in Swift Current on Feb. 4.
“The new 2008 price structure will allow lentil and chickpea growers to reduce their input costs while taking advantage of Crown’s superior control of ascochyta,” UAP seed treatment manager Brodie Blair said in the company’s release.
Crown had originally been distributed by Gustafson and most recently by Bayer CropScience, which bought sole control of Gustafson in 2004. Chemtura had previously owned half of Gustafson in a joint venture with Bayer, and had always held the registration on Crown.
