If your ripe canola looks like it’s covered in a black mould or soot, there’s good news and bad news.
According to specialists on the Manitoba CropChatter site, the sooty growth is caused by fungi that only infect dead or dying tissue. That’s the good news. The bad news, however, is that so far, provincial specialists have seen this fungi growing on plants that are senescing earlier than others in the field due to disease — particularly, blackleg.
