Canadian National (CN) has temporarily cut back freight service in most parts of Western Canada due to “extreme cold and wind conditions,” the company said Tuesday afternoon.

The company said it expects the service reduction to last for up to 36 hours and customers should thus expect delayed transit times for their shipments.

“The health and safety of our employees and the security of our customers’ shipments are CN’s top priority,” CN CEO Hunter Harrison said in a release.

“After carefully evaluating the situation in Western Canada, we have determined that modifying our freight operations is the most prudent course of action for all our stakeholders.”

Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) hasn’t yet made a similar announcement but already had western winter woes of its own on Tuesday.

Canwest News Service reported Tuesday that CPR crews were picking up spilled grain after three cars in a westbound freight train jumped the tracks just outside Vancouver’s downtown early Tuesday morning. City commuters were already contending with heavy snowfall in the area.
