The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is proposing an addition to the proposed next-generation national agriculture framework to address regional issues that support the national goals.
The proposed program, which the CFA has dubbed AgriFlex, would complement national programs such as AgriInvest and AgriStability and establish federal funding to support the cost-shared programs, said CFA president Bob Friesen.
“We need to be able to tailor-make programs that meet unique regional needs within broad national goals,” Friesen said in a release. ” There are lots of good regional ideas out there across the country that are benefiting or would benefit the farmers in those regions, while still moving agriculture forward nationally.”

China seeks improved ties with Canada amid rising trade tensions
China called on Friday for steps to improve bilateral ties with Canada, saying there were no deep-seated conflicts of interest, following a spike in trade tensions with many of Beijing’s Western trade partners this year.
The proposal has quickly garnered support from other agriculture groups. The Ontario-Quebec Grain Farmers’ Coalition has issued a public comment supporting the CFA program.
“Challenges affecting grain farmers in Quebec are very different from challenges livestock producers face in Alberta,” said William Van Tassel, the coalition’s president.
“We would like to thank the CFA for addressing this issue and recognizing it’s time the government finds a workable solution to adequately address needs affecting our diverse agriculture industry across the country.”
