Buenos Aires | Reuters — Port workers in Argentina’s Rosario grains hub will start an indefinite wage strike on Thursday, Edgardo Quiroga, head of the San Lorenzo chapter of the powerful CGT labor union, said in an interview Wednesday.
With inflation estimated at more than 30 per cent, one of the world’s highest rates, Argentine unions have hunkered down for a tough round of wage talks.
“Starting at midnight, the protest will halt activity at the ports of San Lorenzo, San Martin and Timbues,” which make up the main part of the grains export hub, Quiroga said.
The work stoppage comes at the height of Argentina’s harvest soy and corn season. The South American country is the world’s top exporter of soyoil and soymeal, as well as its No. 3 supplier of corn and soybeans.
