Leona Alleslev, Toronto area member of parliament for the
Liberal government, has surprised Ottawa political circles by
quitting the governing Liberals and joining the opposition
Conservative party. The Liberals retain their majority
government by a margin of 12 seats in the House of Commons.
Alleslev cited tax reform, foreign policy and defense as key
reasons for her decision.

U.S. leave it no choice but to retaliate. The Chinese statement
came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed the new
tariffs and said he would add more tariffs if China retaliated.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland is in
Washington, D.C., for more talks to end the standoff over the
North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations. The U.S. has
said it wants a deal by Oct. 1 or it will sign a two-nation
trade deal with Mexico and leave Canada out. U.S. access to
Canadian dairy markets and a dispute resolution mechanism remain
the contentious issues.
