Global Markets: Florence moves closer to U.S. East Coast

Sept. 13 (CNS Canada) — The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Hurricane Florence has weakened slightly into a Category 2 storm as it heads inland for the Carolina coast. Despite the downgrading, Florence’s dangers lie in its storm surges, extreme coastal flooding and heavy rainfall.

– Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking to the Liberal party national caucus in Saskatoon, said Canada will not sign an unfavourable deal as North American Free Trade Agreement talks with the United States continue. U.S. President Donald Trump said he would put his bilateral deal with Mexico before Congress on Sept. 30 if Canada does not sign. Talks are ongoing.

– Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church has accepted the resignation of American bishop Michael J. Bransfield, who is accused of sexual misconduct with adults. The pope has also ordered an investigation, church officials said today. The Pope was meeting with U.S. Catholic Church leaders amid a scandal involving a former American cardinal and demands for the Pope to step down.
