CNS Canada — U.S. canola processor Northstar Agri Industries plans to open its first Canadian delivery point this fall in southern Manitoba.

A new 1,500-tonne high throughput facility at Winkler, Man. will serve the company’s crush plant in Hallock, Minn. as a point for canola receiving, storage and transloading, the company said in a release.

“Canola growers in Manitoba are an increasingly important part of our business,” said Northstar president Neil Juhnke. “This new delivery point will enhance our ability to serve canola growers in southern Manitoba, supporting our expanded processing capacity to serve the growing U.S. market for canola products.”

Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

Farmers will be able to deliver canola to the site at 330 Cargill Road, to be open five days a week, 12 months a year beginning this fall.

The facility is to feature a high-speed, 17,500-bushel-per-hour unloading system, and will serve as a delivery point for Northstar’s Star Growers Premium Priced contracts, the release said.

“We are excited to add a greater level of convenience for our Canadian growers, so they may contract to Northstar Agri Industries and not have to personally deal with the document preparation, road restrictions and inspections that go along with delivering across the border,” said Derek MacLean, grain originator for the company’s Canadian operations.

“Winkler is an ideal location for Canadian canola growers. We look forward to working with our Canadian canola partners, and we feel this new facility will increase the canola being delivered from Canada to our Hallock processing plant.”

Open since 2012, the Northstar facility at Hallock, about 40 km south of the Manitoba/Minnesota border at Emerson, Man., has a processing capacity of 1,400 tons per day and storage for 830,000 bushels, producing food-grade canola oil and meal.
